A co-presentation with RescueNetwork.org

All of us who do rescue face the question sooner or later: Why do we keep doing this? What do we do with our pain? How can we keep helping animals in the face of burn-out, stress, caregiver fatigue, financial burdens, family conflicts, and all the other emotional downsides of doing rescue? Join this panel of dedicated rescue and shelter workers as we look at "Why We Do It, How We Cope." View transcript here.

Nancy Speed
Breeding: How to get started and how to do it right

Monday, February 28, at 10 PM Eastern in The Aviary
After acquiring her first pet cockatiel in 1986, Nancy was lost to the wonder of birds. She focuses on six Amazon species (including Cuban and Vinaceous), ten species of cockatoos, seven species of macaws (including Hyacinth, Illiger’s, and Bluethroated), Caiques, Hawk-headed parrots, and the Queen of Bavaria conure.

Nancy considers parent-fledging a necessity for the future of aviculture and routinely parent-fledge several species, including the Queen of Bavaria and a variety of cockatoos including the Molluccan, Eleanora, Citron and Bare-eyed. She also believes breeders have a responsibility to be stewards of the birds they keep and should embrace and educate the average pet bird owner.

Nancy was a speaker/panelist at The Gabriel Foundation 2000 and 2001 Symposiums, a speaker at the Pet Bird Report Convention 2000, is a regular contributor to Companion Parrot Quarterly, and is a Regional Advisor for The Amazona Society. Nancy is very active in the American Federation of Aviculture, currently serving as the Southeastern Regional Director. View transcript here.

Genny Wall, Attorney and Chair of the AFA Avian Welfare Committee
Legal Issues for Bird Owners

Wednesday, March 2, at 10 PM Eastern in The Aviary
Attorney Genny Wall will join us at BirdHobbyist to discuss legal issues for bird owners. Genny is the Chair of the American Federation of Aviculture's Avian Welfare Committee. The AFA is a nonprofit national organization established in 1974, whose purpose is to represent all aspects of aviculture and to educate the public about keeping and breeding birds in captivity. Genny has owned parrots for more than 17 years, and bred and hand-fed small parrots for several years. Since 1990 she has operated The Last Chance Ranch, a privately owned and privately funded parrot care, conservation, and retirement center in Southern California. The center is currently responsible for the care of more than 300 parrots.

Genny is also on the Board of the Orange County Bird of Prey Center in Lake Forest, CA, a center which receives sick and injured birds of prey, rehabilitates them, and when possible releases them back to the habitat. The center also provides public educational programs on birds of prey.

Nancy Sheffer
"Teach Your Bird To Play!"

Thursday, March 3, at 9 PM Eastern in The Aviary
Nancy Sheffer, also know as Nancbird on the internet, lives in NY with 14 parrots, a hubby Alvin and a German Shepherd dog. She is a popular speaker on parrot safety and play at many bird clubs and organizations, including LIPS, The Real Macaw Club, and the Albany NY Marts. She comes dressed fully feathered when she speaks! After doing rescue for a few years, Nancy found many birds did not know how to play, they just sat, or were afraid of toys. She has now developed her "Teach Your Bird To Play" method, covering all aspects of playing, safe and unsafe toys, and just plain fun! View transcript here.

Diane Lazicki, founder of Lazicki's Bird House & Rescue, Inc.
The Creation and Running of a Successful Bird Rescue and Sanctuary Program

Friday, March 4, at 9 PM Eastern in The Aviary
This chat is co-presented with RescueNetwork.com.
Diane and her husband Steve Lazicki are the cofounders of Lazicki's Bird House & Rescue, which focuses on education and placing birds in good homes. Diane and Steve became involved with bird rescue when they responded to a newspaper ad for a free Nanday Conure. They were given the bird, who was in a too-small cage devoid of toys, without any effort made at screening them by the person giving the bird away. Says Diane, "That was the beginning for Steve and I.... Today, we are full to capacity and for every one bird we place, there are at least three more waiting to come here. We strive to educate as we know that is the only answer to this quiet crisis." View transcript here.
